Interior Trend Predictions for 2027

Interior design trends have a longer lead time than fashion. The decisions that show up in homes in 2027 are being made now, in the fabric houses, furniture studios, and paint labs that set the tone a year or two before anything reaches the high street. Looking ahead gives you a useful steer on where to invest in pieces that will not feel dated quickly, and where to avoid trends that are already on the way out.

Here is what the direction of travel looks like for 2027.

The overarching shift: lived-in over curated

The dominant aesthetic of the past few years, warm white walls, light oak, clean lines, has not disappeared, but it is being layered up. Rooms that felt complete in 2024 now tend to get more texture, more considered pattern, and furniture with a little more weight and presence. The trend is not maximalism, but it is a reaction against the sparseness that defined the previous decade of Scandinavian-influenced interiors. The specific directions where this plays out: warmer colour palettes, textural fabrics, returning patterns, especially in florals and botanicals, and a shift in furniture silhouettes towards softer, more rounded forms with deeper seats.

Colour: warmer, deeper, more enveloping

Neutrals are not going anywhere, but the character of them is changing. Cool greys and whites are giving ground to warmer tones: terracotta, clay, warm stone, mushroom, and dusty pink. These read as neutrals in the sense that they work as backgrounds and are not demanding, but they are warmer and more enveloping than the cool-pale palette that dominated the 2020s.

Alongside those warmer neutrals, there is a strand of deeper, moodier colour: forest green, navy, tobacco, and a kind of aged burgundy that sits between red and brown. These tend to work as accent colours in upholstery and accessories rather than on all four walls, but the appetite for them is growing. Benjamin Moore’s colour direction for 2027 points explicitly towards deeper warmth, colours drawn from nature, more autumnal, more considered.

Fabrics and textures: character over smoothness

Boucle remains strong. What started as a sharp trend has settled into something with real staying power because it adds warmth and depth without demanding much from the rest of the room. Alongside boucle, chenille is gaining ground: softer and more fluid, with a slight sheen and a tactile quality that works in both contemporary and more traditional settings. Linen and linen-mix fabrics remain a strong choice for a relaxed, lived-in feel. Their slight texture and natural variation read as considered rather than precious.

The move away from smooth, clean upholstery is part of the same shift away from show-home aesthetics. A fabric that shows a little character, a slight nap, a woven texture, a subtle weave, contributes to spaces feeling genuine rather than assembled.

Pattern: botanical, heritage, considered

Pattern is coming back, with a specific character. The pattern gaining ground for 2027 is not bold geometric or abstract. It is botanical and floral, with an emphasis on slightly faded, heritage-inflected palettes. William Morris-style designs, botanical prints, and large-scale florals are all moving from the margins into more mainstream interiors. The Swyft x Morris & Co collection sits squarely in this direction: designs with the kind of quality that people come back to because it is durable, not because it is fashionable.

The way pattern tends to come back into interiors after a plain period is through accessories first. Cushions, throws, a statement chair. The return of pattern in 2027 is likely to be more considered and layered than the maximalist moments of the early 2010s.

Furniture shapes: softer, rounder, more generous

The clean, rectilinear silhouette, block-shaped sofas with hard edges and thin arms, is softening. Rounded arms, curved backs, and deeper seats are all in the direction of travel. Furniture that feels generous in proportion and comfortable to actually use, rather than furniture optimised for looking good in a wide-angle photograph, is gaining ground. Browse our full range of sofas to see shapes that fit this direction.

In occasional furniture, there is a parallel interest in natural materials with more visible character: stone, marble with visible veining, timber with grain that is allowed to show rather than sanded into uniformity.

Rugs: bigger, bolder, more considered

Rugs are increasingly being treated as the anchor of a room rather than an afterthought. The shift is towards larger sizes, a rug that the front legs of the sofa actually sit on, rather than a smaller island of pattern that floats under the coffee table. Natural fibres (jute, sisal, wool) remain strong, and there is growing interest in vintage-style and distressed-pattern rugs with muted, aged palettes that work alongside both the warmer neutrals and the botanical patterns coming through for 2027.

What is on the way out

The most visible casualty is the all-white or bright white interior. White walls, white woodwork, white furniture. This look peaked during the pandemic and is now being replaced by the warmer neutrals described above. It is not that white is wrong, but very cold, blue-toned whites are starting to look dated.

Similarly, the very minimal interior, one statement piece per room, almost no accessories, bare surfaces, is giving ground. The appeal of empty rooms has faded for many people who actually live in them: a room that photographs well but has nowhere to put a book or a glass is a room you can feel self-conscious in. The move is not towards clutter, but towards rooms that acknowledge the people living in them.

How to incorporate 2027 trends without redecorating

The most cost-effective entry points are accessories and soft furnishings. Cushions and throws are the lowest-commitment way to introduce new colour and texture. A new rug can shift the character of a living room more dramatically than most other single changes. If you're considering larger investments, choose boucle, chenille, or linen over smooth, flat-weave upholstery. They are likely to feel current for longer.
