What to consider when buying a bed?

Your preferences matter. The more detail you give, the better. Do you hate or love memory foam and why? Do you like a firm mattress and if so, why? Do you sleep hot and do you know what makes you overheat? These all all things to consider when looking for a new bed to make it last years to come.

How to measure a bed?

Getting your bed measurements right is an absolute must, follow these simple rules to ensure you're getting the perfect size for your space:
1. Measure the length
Measure from the very top of the headboard to the bottom of the footboard. If there’s no footboard, measure to the end of the frame.
2. Measure the width
Measure from the widest point on one side of the frame to the widest point on the other. Always include the frame, not just the mattress area.
3. Measure the height
If the bed has a headboard, measure from the floor to the top of it. You might also want to measure from the floor to the top of the mattress to check overall bed height.
4. Measure the internal mattress space
This is the space inside the frame where the mattress sits. It should match your mattress size exactly for a neat fit.
5. Check clearance space
Measure how much space you have around the bed for doors, drawers or storage to open easily.

What to avoid when buying a bed?

Buying a bed frame? Watch out for these common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong size for your room
A bed that’s too big or too small can throw the whole space off. Measure properly before you commit.
  • Forgetting about storage
If you’re short on space, built-in storage can be a game changer. Don’t overlook it.
  • Not checking how sturdy it feels
A good bed frame should feel solid, not squeaky or wobbly.
  • Ignoring mattress compatibility
Not every frame works with every mattress. Always check before buying.
  • Overlooking the overall height
Bed height affects both comfort and how the room looks, so it’s worth considering.
  • Skipping the assembly details
Some beds are easier to put together than others. Knowing what’s involved can save a lot of hassle.
  • Choosing style over quality
Looks matter, but quality is what makes a bed last.
  • Not thinking about your floor type
Carpet and hard floors can change how a bed frame feels and sits, so it’s worth factoring in.

How can you tell if a bed is good quality?

Let’s break down what actually helps you spot the difference.

Bed size and dimensions
Make sure everything lines up properly. A well-made bed should fit your mattress neatly, with no overhang or awkward gaps.

Slat support and mattress compatibility
Good slats offer solid, even support and work with your chosen mattress, not against it.

Comfort and build quality
It should feel sturdy and well put together, with no creaks, wobbles or flimsy bits.

Warranty and brand reputation
A decent warranty and a brand that stands by its products are always good signs.

What is the average lifespan of a bed?

Mattresses usually last around 7 to 10 years, but it depends on the material. Latex and high-quality foams tend to go the distance at 8 to 10 years plus, while innerspring or budget foams might need replacing after 5 to 7 years. Sagging, discomfort or allergies are often a bigger clue than age that it’s time for a new one. Using a good mattress protector and rotating your mattress regularly can help it last even longer.
