How to make a sofa bed more comfortable

Gone are the days of lumpy mattresses and awkward fold-outs, today’s sofa beds have had a serious glow-up. But even the sleekest model could benefit from a few comfort-boosting tricks to feel extra cosy. Whether you’ve got guests en route or you’re using one full-time, here’s how to make your sofa bed feel like the real deal. Your guests (and their backs) will thank you.
Start with the right sofa bed
Before we get into the hacks and add-ons, it’s worth saying: not all sofa beds are created equal. If you’re shopping for one, prioritise comfort as much as you would with a proper bed or sofa, and look for high-quality materials like memory foam or a pocket-sprung mattress (that’s what you’ll find in our sofa beds).
Also consider the mechanism. Some models fold out in seconds (hello, click-clack styles) while others require a bit more effort. When it’s late at night and your guests are already in their PJs, ease matters.

Add a mattress topper
The quickest and most effective way to transform a sofa bed is with a mattress topper. Whether your built-in mattress is too firm or too thin, a good quality topper can level up the comfort instantly (and keep the mattress fresh between guests).
Memory foam toppers are brilliant for contouring to the body and easing pressure points. If you're short on storage, look for one that rolls or folds up compactly (under-bed storage boxes or vacuum bags are your friend here).

Mind the middle
Many sofa beds have a notorious ridge or support bar running right down the centre—not exactly ideal for a good night’s kip. If yours has a noticeable bar, a thick mattress topper will help, but you can also try placing a folded duvet or blanket directly underneath the sheet to soften it further. If it's really bad, some people go the extra mile and add a layer of plywood beneath the mattress to offer some extra support. A bit extreme, maybe—but if the sofa bed doubles up as your main bed, be worth it.

Layer on the bedding
To make your sofa bed feel more like a proper bed and less like a temporary fix, make it feel more luxe with the bedding. Think hotel-style layering with a soft fitted sheet, a plush duvet, an extra blanket and a couple of full, supportive pillows. And since most sofa beds lack a headboard, prop up a couple of large, firm cushions behind those pillows. Not only does it make reading or scrolling more comfortable, but it also gives the whole setup a more polished, intentional feel—like a guest room that just happens to fold away.

Think about placement
Sofa bed placement isn’t just about where it fits, it’s about how it functions. Aim to position it in a way that allows easy access from both sides, avoiding tight corners or obstacles that make getting in and out a hassle. If space allows, try placing the sofa bed in a room that can double as a guest retreat—a home office, snug, or second living space works beautifully. This not only offers your guest some privacy but also means they’ve got a calm spot to unwind if the main living areas are still full of chatter. Thoughtful positioning helps the sofa bed feel like a considered part of the home, rather than an afterthought.
