How to Choose the Most Comfortable Sofa Style

Your home is your sanctuary. It’s a place to relax at the end of the day, to spend time with friends and family in, and make lots of happy memories. That's why you deserve furniture that brings both comfort and style to your home.

The right sofa can make all the difference to your living room, so choosing the most comfortable sofa should be top priority. On average, we Brits spend about 17 years of our lives in total on the sofa- that's a lot of lounging.

In this handy guide, we've gathered our top tips for ensuring you get the maximum comfort you deserve when buying a sofa online.

1. The Frame

It all starts with what's beneath the fabric. Strong, sturdy and sustainably sourced wood or tough metal with well-made fastenings is key. If you’re investing in a sofa, you want to make sure it’ll last you for years to come.

At Swyft, Models 00 to 05 are made with solid wood frames, manufactured in Portugal using sustainable, traceable timber. In fact, we’re so confident that our quality wood frames will stand the test of time that we offer a 15-year guarantee on those particular perches.

Not quite long enough? Our Model 06 collection which features a coated steel frame is guaranteed for a whopping 100 years. Impressive, right?

2. Sofa Arms

Don't overlook this important element when buying a new sofa. You'll want to make sure the arms can withstand hours of lounging, leaning back and general wear and tear.

Thankfully, Swyft sofas are held together by innovative Swyft-lok technology, and rigorously stress tested so you can be 100% confident that they'll stand the test of time, no matter who wants to climb on them. To find out more about Swyft-lok, click here.

3. Cushion Fillings

There are many different types of sofa fillings available, and it can be a bit of a minefield to navigate and choose the filling best suited to your needs. The three most common sofa fillings are:

  • Feather

Undeniably the softest type of sofa filling, this is a great option for those that like to really sink into their sofa. To find out how to take care of your feather filled sofa, tap here.
  • Foam

Well-known for holding their shape, being comfortable and pretty low maintenance, foam-filled sofas are ideal for families, or households with multiple occupants. Check out the Model 04 if you're looking for a feather-free foam option that doesn't compromise on comfort.
  • Fibre

Sofas with a fibre filling tend to be soft, bouncy and have a relaxed feel to them. They’re perfect for people who either can’t or don’t want feathers but still want an element of softness to put their feet up on. The Model 05 ticks all the boxes when it comes to fibre fillings, and more.

At Swyft, we recognise that comfort is a personal thing, which is why our sofas come in a variety of filling options, so you can choose what works best for you.

4. Sofa shapes and Sizes

Sofa shapes and sizes

One of the most important things you’ll need to consider when choosing your sofa is how many people will usually be sitting on it. Does it need to accommodate the whole family or just you and your partner? Do you like to lie down on the sofa? Do your kids like using the sofa as a trampoline? All these questions are important for determining the size and design of your sofa. You’ll also need to think about how much space you have in your sitting room, bedroom or home office and how many seats you need.

Swyft sofas come in a 2 seater (175cm long) and 3 seater (205cm long) format and we also offer armchairs (80cm long). Our Model 01 sofas come in 2 or 3-seater options, making them ideal for couples or small families. And as the 3-seater versions have 3 separate cushions on the base, it gives you that extra bit of seating, meaning there’s no short straw drawn if you end up in the middle

Our Model 02 2 and 3-seater sofas do come with one long seat cushion rather than the usual separate cushions, making it ideal to lounge and stretch out on. Also, perfect for couples or small families this type of sofa is sat on a solid wood plinth so you can expect durability and is leading the return of the mid-century decor style.

If you have a large space, a bigger family or plan on hosting many friends again one day, then our Model 03 sofas would be ideal for you. These sectional sofas arrive in separate modules, so you can design them however works best for your space. From two seats to ten, left or right corner, with or without an ottoman, you choose exactly how you want it. This type of sofa doesn't use the Swyft-lok technology to lock together, so you have the flexibility of movement when needed.

5. Which Sofa Fabric is Best?

Lastly, the type of sofa fabric you choose can make a big difference in the overall comfort of the sofa. While this is down to personal preference, it’s important to take note of the pros and cons of each option.

  • Woven fabrics

These often come with a stain-resistant coating, making them durable and easy to clean. Woven fabrics like linen are also naturally cooler, making them perfect for even the hottest of days.
  • Velvet

If you're looking to make a style statement without compromising on colour, velvet material should be your go-to for a new sofa. Enjoy the soft luxury of velvet without having to break the bank.

At Swyft, our velvet sofas and linen fabric sofas have stain-resistant properties coating each and every fibre for protection against all sorts of spills. Discover how easy it is to clean up our fabrics here, and never stress about stains again.
