Table Lamps vs Floor Lamps: Which One’s Right For You?

A Amber Howells

Lighting is about more than function, it’s about ambience, style, and how your space feels. From reading in bed, hosting in the living room, or trying to make a small space feel roomier, the right lamp can make all the difference.

But, which right for you: A table lamp or a floor lamp?

What’s the difference?

Table lamps

Table lamps typically sit on desks, side tables, console tables, bedside tables, and other surfaces. They’re great for focused or ambient lighting, and they’re ideal for small spaces with layered lighting (especially if you’re not a fan of the big light.)

Floor lamps

Floor lamps are considered a standalone piece. They usually stand at 4-6ft, making them ideal as a design statement or lighting up a dark corner. Table lamps work best in reading corners, or rooms that are tight on surface space.

Choosing a lamp based on your space

If you’re working with a small room, opt for sleek table lamps that can sit on furniture that you already own. Chrome lamps add a modern feel to your space and are trending for AW25, whilst modern wood lamps bring a timeless touch to any space.

Styling tip: Expand the room and double the light by placing your table lamp in front of wall mirrors.

If you’re in a larger or open-plan room, look for oversized or statement floor lamps to define parts of your home. Sit a tall floor lamp behind your favourite armchair, occasional chair, or sofa to create a visual anchor and reading space. Avoid too many table lamps and accent lamps as this can lead to a cluttered space.
