How to make a guest bedroom feel more homely

You’ve got friends staying for the weekend, and you want them to feel at home. Here are some ways to create a cosy, welcoming guest room your visitors will love.

Invest in a good sofa bed
If your guest space doubles as an office, a snug, or even just an overflow storage room (we all have one), a comfy sofa bed is a solid investment. But not all sofa beds are created equal. Look for one with a sturdy frame and a thick mattress that isn’t going to squeak every time someone turns over. And buy one that looks as good as a sofa as it does as a bed, for a room that feels cohesive and considered, whether you have guests staying or not.

Add a mattress topper for extra comfort
A sofa bed mattress has to fold, so it’s never going to be the same as the mattress you’ll have on a bed. But a memory foam or down-filled mattress topper can elevate your sofa bed into a much more comfortable place to sleep. It’s an easy, affordable addition that makes a world of difference.

Set up the bed before they arrive
There’s something about walking into a room where the bed is already made that just feels instantly welcoming. Fresh sheets, a cosy duvet, and a throw blanket for extra warmth? That’s the dream. Whether they’ve just had a long day of travelling, or you end up talking into the small hours, they can head off to bed with ease, just as they would at home.

Provide chargers and the WiFi password
No one wants to be crawling under furniture looking for a plug. Save your guests the hassle by providing a charging cable (or two) and making sure there’s an easily accessible plug near the bed. And while you’re at it, write down the WiFi password and leave it somewhere obvious, so they can connect when they arrive, and show you that video they’ve been laughing about.

Put towels in their room
If you’re a guest at someone’s home, the last thing you want to do is wake up your host to ask where the towels are so you can go for a shower. Make it easy for them (and you) and put some towels and face cloths in their room. This way, they can get ready for the day as they please.

Give them a place for their stuff
Living out of a suitcase is not fun. Even if your guest room doesn’t have a full wardrobe, giving guests a small luggage rack, a few hangers, or even a chair where they can place their things makes a huge difference. If space is tight, a couple of hooks on the wall can do the trick. You can also offer to store their bags somewhere else, if floor space is limited.

Add a bedside table
If your guest room is also your office, it’s likely that you won’t have a bedside table in there. But a side table or even a small stool next to the sofa bed can make a room feel instantly more homely. Add a lamp for late-night reading, a bottle of water and even a small trinket dish for jewellery and keys.
