4 tips for Cohesive Christmas Decor

Christmas might last for just one day, but we live with our Christmas decor for the entire month (maybe even more if you’re feeling extra festive).

Your decorations become an extension of your space. They’re the backdrop of your holiday season. Follow our tips for festive touches that feel as considered and sophisticated as your interior design.

1. Choose a theme

Having a clear theme will help you edit out the Christmas decorations that are—while adorable—not right for your home. Thankfully, there are plenty of themes to choose from. For example:

  • Victorian Christmas: stockings, candles, holly, poinsettias
  • Scandinavian Christmas: fairisle, cosy blankets, frosted pine
  • Luxe Christmas: velvet ribbons, gold, garlands
  • Winter Wonderland: snowflakes, fur, glass ornaments
  • Mid-Century Christmas: pastel colours, nine-point stars, tinsel
  • Nutcracker Christmas: stripes, drums, nutcrackers, ballerinas
  • Highland Christmas: tartan, fireplaces, stags
  • Woodland Christmas: acorns, robins, pinecones, twine

And so many more. Once you have your theme, you can weave it throughout all the decorations in your space.

2. Find your colour palette

The quickest and easiest way to make your Christmas decor feel more refined is to work within a colour palette.

Now, when we think of Christmas, we automatically picture red and green. It’s a classic for a reason and feels instantly festive. But if tradition isn’t your thing, there are some other routes you can take.

Create a neutral base with snow whites and pale wood, then add a pop of any colour with small details. Or take inspiration from the ‘dark and earthy’ trend we’re predicting for 2025 with deep, pine-toned greens.

You can also use the colours in your existing space as a starting point. Could that pale blue on the walls create a beautiful contrast with red, candy cane stripes? Or could you complement the warmth of your burnt orange sofa with ribbon-tied cinnamon sticks and clove-studded clementines? With this approach, it’s much easier to tie things together.

3. Make your Christmas tree adaptable

If you decide to change your Christmas theme, or redecorate your home, you don’t want to be forced into buying an entire new box of baubles.

Instead, you can build a collection of ‘core’ baubles that you pair with statement ornaments or colourful ribbon when you want to switch things up.

Glass and metallics are good options because they go with absolutely everything. But if, for example, you know that red will always be present in your Christmas decor, invest in some beautiful red baubles that you’ll enjoy for years to come.

4. Decorate beyond the tree

If you’re doing Christmas decor throughout your entire home, or an open living space, there should be a continuous thread throughout.

There are plenty of ways you can sprinkle some festive cheer throughout your home (without needing a Christmas tree in every room). Add some candles and ornaments to your sideboard or console table in the hallway, or make your space feel extra cosy with luxe cushions and soft throws. Adorn an empty wall with bunting, spruce up a doorway with the tension rod garland trend that blew up on TikTok, or try any of our other Christmas decor ideas for small spaces

For people who love interior design, decorating for Christmas is almost as exciting as Christmas day itself. With these tips, we hope you can create a timeless Christmas decor scheme that feels like a celebration of your personal taste, to go along with the celebratory mood of the season.
