3 Autumn Interior Trends - According To Pinterest

September signals the transition between seasons, and as we say goodbye to long summer evenings and days spent on the garden decking, we’re exploring ways to refresh your home decor this autumn. Want to make sure your home is on-trend this season? Pinterest has released its Autumn 2024 Trend Report, highlighting the most frequently searched for hot topics this year and that are set to lead the new season.

To keep you ahead of the curve with the latest interior trends, we’ve rounded up 3 key design insights from the report to inspire your next home makeover.

Japanese-Inspired

This Autumn, the focus is on designing harmonious spaces that blend tranquillity with comfort and style. Pinterest users are looking to draw inspiration from Japanese interiors with search terms ‘zen house‘ ‘Japanese living room design’ and ‘Japanese zen garden’ all up significantly.

The core of Japanese design is to embrace minimalism. When it comes to home decor, declutter your space and focus on quality over quantity. Choose multi-functional furniture, like sideboards or console tables with built-in storage or ottomans that double up as extra seating. By simplifying the room, you’ll create an open and inviting environment.

When considering the colour scheme, opt for a neutral palette with hues of white, beige, or cream, combined with earthy greens and browns. If you want to infuse more colour into your space, consider exploring ‘Japanese vintage art’, which has seen a +270% increase in searches on Pinterest, for shades of orange and blue.

Promote a sense of serenity by incorporating soothing fragrances with the addition of candles, incense, or diffusers. Low-profile sofas with a clean, simple design like our Model 03 promote a sense of relaxation. You can enhance the traditional Japanese aesthetic by pairing it with a low coffee table. With searches for ‘air-purifying plants’ rising by +850%, incorporating Japanese-inspired options like a Peace Lily or Snake Plant can bring a natural touch to your space.

Florals

If you thought floral prints were just for Spring, think again. Searches for ‘floral room aesthetic’ have gone up by +370%, with users looking to embrace dreamy cosy corners infused with soothing colours.

The key is finding ways to integrate this into your home in a way that reflects your style. For a mid-century aesthetic, consider incorporating vintage florals with classic patterns and muted colours. You can do this through wallpaper and upholstery, and pair with antique pieces.

For those who would prefer a modern take on this trend, look at bold oversized floral prints that make a statement. These can serve as the focal point of a room, adding a contemporary edge and creating a dramatic contrast against minimalist furnishings.

Is your style eclectic? Clash floral prints with wall prints, cushions, and throws. Then layer textures with woven baskets, jute rugs and wooden furniture to achieve a bohemian vibe.

Green Colour Palette

Green has been a popular choice for interior colour palettes for quite some time now, with our best-selling fabric choice for sofas being Velvet Vine. Pinterest suggests this trend is going nowhere with searches for ‘green home decor’ up by a whooping +2670% vs. last year.

A colour that symbolises renewal and growth, as a design trend, green interiors offer a refreshing escape in our homes from the outside world. With a range of shades, there’s a style to suit all tastes.

For those who lean towards pastels then soft greens such as sage or mint combine perfectly with a blush pink for a soothing palette which makes the space feel inviting, ideal for a bedroom. Alternatively, combine with a mustard yellow for an eclectic palette that suits a mid-century modern aesthetic. Mid-tone greens such as olive or moss can create an earthy feel, perfect for a living room or dining room. For an autumnal palette, blend with a reddish-brown rust shade and beige tones. Looking to create a dramatic statement? Add a bold green like emerald or forest green to a statement wall or key furniture piece blended with neutral shades like charcoal for a sleek and dramatic appearance.

If you don't want to centre your entire colour palette around green, you can incorporate small accents through textiles such as cushions, rugs, and throws. Feel free to experiment with various shades, as our interior design expert, Kelly, recommends blending multiple green tones for added depth and interest.
