Every year since 1999, Pantone—the famous colour referencing company—has selected a colour to mark the beginning of a new year.
“The Pantone Colour of the Year program engages the design community and colour enthusiasts in a conversation around colour, highlighting the relationship between colour and culture. Pantone selects a colour each year that captures the global zeitgeist—the Colour of the Year expresses a global mood and an attitude, reflecting collective desire in the form of a single, distinct hue”, explains the Pantone website.

For 2025, Pantone’s colour of the year is “Mocha Mousse”—a soft, warming brown that’s simple and comforting, but also rich and indulgent.
“Underpinned by our desire for everyday pleasures, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence. Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director Pantone Color Institute.
Feel inspired? Here’s how you can use this harmonious shade in your next interior design project.
Biophilic Design
In our 2025 trend report, we predicted that bringing the outdoors in will remain a top priority for interior design. In lieu of bright leafy greens, designers are using warm, earthy browns (like Mocha Mousse) to create this biophilic feel.
“There is a growing movement to align ourselves more closely with the natural world. Characterized by its organic nature, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse honors and embraces the sustenance of our physical environment.” says Pantone’s 2025 press release. “[It] evokes a feeling of the comfort of home whether appearing on flooring or a painted wall, within home décor or in more natural materials including wood and stone, rattan and wicker, leather and linen.”
Tonal Layering
Another big trend for 2025 is tonal layering. This is where you combine different hues of the same colour in one room.
Mocha Mousse is a great addition to this trend. Because it’s not as light as a beige, but not as dark as bitter chocolate. It sits somewhere in the middle. You can easily pair it with a brown sofa, a walnut sideboard and a neutral rug and it will feel right at home.

A New Neutral
When selecting a neutral base for brighter colour palettes, people tend to go for beige or off-white. But Mocha Mousse can stand in as a warmer, more distinctive neutral.
On Pantone’s website, they show how Mocha Mousse can complement gentle tones of green, blue and lilac (or ‘Serene Hues’ as we referenced them in our 2025 colour trend report).
They call it their “Floral Pathways” palette “A cornucopia of suggestively scented floral tones, blended with a soft mocha and a shaded willow green, leads us down a cobblestone path.”
It shows us that neutrals don’t always have to blend into the background. They can still have impact, whilst supporting the other colours in your palette.
Elevated Accessories
If you’re not committed to colour drenching your walls, ceilings and doors in Mocha Mousse, you can easily incorporate it into your space with home accessories.
Add some luxe to your bedroom with Mocha Mousse cushions, or dial up the warmth in your hallway with Mocha Mousse curtains. An ultra-soft throw in this harmonious hue can also imbue a subtle indulgence on any loveseat.

The Mocha Mousse Mood
The Pantone Colour of the Year is always driven by a certain mood. And the committee pour endless thought and detail into their decision.
If the colour itself is not to your taste, you can always take inspiration from the Mocha Mousse mood to determine the direction of your home decor.
Pantone describes Mocha Mousse as:
- “Thoughtful indulgence”
- “Connection, comfort, and harmony”
- “Subtle elegance and sensorial richness”
- “Feelings of contentment”
- “Authentic and approachable, [but] rich and indulgent”
- “Sensorial warmth”
- “Redolent with the essence of cacao, chocolate and coffee”
- “An everyday escape and well-deserved treat”
- “Sophisticated and lush”
- “Earthy yet refined”
- “Both minimalist and richly decorated”
- “Inspiring a positive state of inner peace, calm, and balance”
- “Comfort and opulence [with] a tasteful touch of glamour”
