With Summer comes longer nights, warmer weather and a feeling of optimism. So how can we translate that positive mood into our homes?
Colour psychologists have confirmed that colour has the ability to influence our mood. Whilst neutrals and darker shades might be your preference, 2024 interior trend, Pastel Clashes, promotes a calm and euphoric atmosphere, which makes you feel uplifted.
Here, we look at the best shade combinations for rooms that are guaranteed to make you feel happy as soon as you step inside.
Cobalt Blue and Buttery Yellow
If you want to add energy into your home, cobalt is the way to go. The vibrancy injects personality, whilst a contrasting soft butter yellow shade offers a tranquilty.
Interior designer, Kelly Collins encourages the balance of these different shades, “This juxtaposition adds depth and interest to your decor, creating a dynamic and playful atmosphere that uplifts the mood of the room.”
Soft Pink and Sage Green
For some, creating a calming atmosphere promotes feelings of content. If that sounds like your ideal space, then try blending together two gentle hues. Paired with the femininity of a pastel pink, soft sage green is a nod to nature, guaranteed to make your room feel tranquil and peaceful.
Kelly declares: “With “Sweet Embrace”, a soft pink pastel colour, named Dulux’s colour of the year 2024, underscores the growing popularity of pastels in home decor. Sweet Embrace is a delicate pink pastel that exudes warmth and tenderness, inviting you to unwind and embrace moments of quiet reflection.”
These are great colour palettes to start to introduce into a neutral home without making it feel too overwhelming.
Citrus Orange and Chalky Blue
Interior designers are naming Chalky Blue as the colour of the season, crediting it’s ability to brighten up any room. The combination of a citrus orange is the perfect example of how opposites on a colour wheel can compliment each other for a vibrant colour scheme. Kelly agrees that “by incorporating a combination of muted pastels such as baby blue, with bold accents like vibrant coral, you can create a visually striking yet balanced look. For example, pair a pastel blue sofa with throw pillows in bright citrus hues.”
Sunny Yellow and Dusty Pink
Sunny Yellow is the ultimate feel-good colour, using it in your home can instantly lift your spirits. The shade partners perfectly with a subdued pink for creating serene interiors. The pink is ideal to use as your base colour on walls or larger furniture pieces, whilst the pops of yellow can be introduced through home decor, wall art or accent furniture.
To avoid the colours feeling overwhelming, Kelly suggests being careful with your selection of lighting. “The right lighting can significantly impact the mood and ambiance of your pastel-themed space. Opt for soft, diffused lighting options like pendant lights with fabric shades, floor lamps with linen or paper shades, or table lamps with frosted glass or ceramic bases. Avoid harsh overhead lighting and instead focus on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere with layered lighting sources.”
Emerald Green and Soft Blue
We’ve all heard the phrase – ‘never wear blue or green unless there’s something in between’ – but fortunately that isn’t the case when it comes to your home interiors. Despite these colours being neighbours on the colour wheel, both these shades are cool colours which makes them feel refreshing in your home. To nail this combination, Kelly recommends experimenting with textures. “Create visual interest and depth through texture layering. Mix and match different textures, such as plush fabrics like velvet or knits, natural fibers like linen or jute, and smooth finishes like ceramic or glass.”
Which of these colour combinations do you love the sound of?
