Curved edges and scalloped shapes are taking over from clean, straight lines—adding a playful feel to our homes.
What is the Waved Edges interior design trend?
Waved edges are design elements we’re more frequently seeing on furniture like beds and shelving units, and home decor items like mirrors, trays and even candles. This trend celebrates shapes that feel natural and approachable, bringing a softer, inviting quality to spaces.
“Curved edges and flowing forms create a sense of movement and harmony, making rooms feel more relaxed and less rigid,” says Kelly Collins, our Head of Interior Design.
Where did the Waved Edges interior design trend come from?
Many leading designers have embraced curved edges and scalloped shapes in recent interior projects and we’re expecting this to continue into 2025.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where this trend came from, but there were certainly some key pieces that contributed to its growing popularity. For example: In 2019, the Ultrafragola mirror, designed by Italian architect Ettore Sottsass in 1970, exploded online—becoming a firm favourite of celebrities, influencers and designers alike. It’s an art piece in itself. A sculpture that just so happens to be a mirror.
Then in 2023, everyone became obsessed with these chunky plates (or ‘bubble plates’) made by Swedish furniture and interior designer Gustaf Westman. Their seemingly overnight success spurred a frenzy in the industry—with many brands creating dupes, or other items like mugs and frames inspired by the design.
More recently, in early 2024, bobbin moulding started popping up in homes and DIY projects—adding a whimsical charm to wood panelling and furniture. While small bobbin detailing has been around for a long time, oversized bobbin trim put a new spin on a classic. It feels akin to the chunky, bubble-like vibe of Westman’s plates.
How to apply the Waved Edges trend in your home
What makes this trend so versatile is that you can incorporate it in subtle ways with decor pieces or go all in with bold architectural elements. “Think scalloped edges on furniture, curved sofas, arched doorways, and rounded decorative accents—all bringing a playful, whimsical vibe to interiors” Kelly explains.
Here are some ways to add this fun trend to your home.
Furnish your home with organic shapes
If you’re looking to steer away from the minimalist, clean lines then this is a great opportunity to invest in furniture that adapts to this trend. Look for tables, sofas, or bed headboards with soft, curving edges. A coffee table with a waved edge not only adds a sculptural element but also creates a safer environment in family-friendly homes to avoid sharp corners.
Make a statement with wavy mirrors
One of the easiest ways to embrace this trend is with wavy mirrors. Inspired by the Ultrafragola mirror, these flowing, undulating frames have become increasingly popular, so there are plenty of options out there that don’t cost an arm and a leg. They’re a perfect entry point for anyone wanting to try out the trend without making a major commitment.
Go all-in with architectural details
For those ready to let this trend take centre stage in their homes, consider integrating waved edges into your space’s architecture. Arched doorways, curved mouldings, or scalloped shelving are great examples of making a bold statement. These elements reshape the way a space feels, making it flow effortlessly while exuding a sense of calm and sophistication.
Test the trend with accessories
If you’d prefer to introduce this trend subtly, opt for waved-edge soft furnishings like cushions, rugs, or curtains with scalloped or wavy hems or organic, flowing patterns. These pieces allow you to experiment with the style while keeping it understated and versatile.
This embrace of organic shapes in 2025 reflects a broader movement towards comfort, individuality, and playfulness in design, where interiors become not just functional spaces but also creative expressions of personal style.
