5 Tips To Keep Your Home Tidy During The School Holidays

The school summer holidays are finally upon us. For those with children, it’s a great opportunity to spend lots of quality family time together whilst they’re at home more regularly. However, between keeping your kids entertained and work, you might find staying on top of house chores can be a little more difficult.

If you’re already noticing that your home is starting to look a little more cluttered than usual, then we’re here to help you bring some order back. We’ve come up with some quick solutions to keeping your home tidy.

1. Do little and often

Tidying up as you do your daily tasks will cut down the time needed for a deep clean.

The ‘one touch’ rule is a great example of how you can achieve this. The method is self-explanatory; only touch something once. For example, if you've washed and dried clothes, you might be tempted to put them to one side to be organized at a later date. However, if you were to put them directly into drawers or your wardrobe from the drier, the job is complete and won’t need a ‘second touch’. This rule can be applied to all aspects of organizing, so when you come to do your house reset, you’ll find most things are already where they should be.

Another hack is to always keep wipes or a cloth handy in every room so you can wipe down surfaces as you go. When you’re done brushing teeth, wipe down the sink. As you’re cooking, clean up the crumbs as you go.

2. Get the kids involved

The likelihood is that your children are the ones making most of the mess in the house, so there’s nothing wrong with getting them to help tidy. Try to make it into a fun team-building activity – provide everyone with their individual cleaning task. Try to motivate them: play music or turn it into a race to see who can complete their task in the fastest time.

If you’re comfortable doing so, you could implement a rewards system to treat the kids for accomplishing their tasks.

3. Find storage solutions

An easy way to keep the house de-cluttered is by investing in storage units. A storage ottoman is the ideal multi-functional piece of furniture to contain toys or games without taking away from the aesthetic of your home. It’s never been easier to tidy, by just lifting the lid up, throwing everything inside and keeping mess hidden away.

4. Spend more time outside

Avoid mess inside the house by trying to stay out of it. Although the UK weather can be hit and miss, the longer days mean there’s more time to spend outside. Plan some fun activities to explore the outdoors as a family or just open up the back garden doors and let them enjoy playing with toys in the garden. Whilst they’re occupied you could even whizz around the house with a hoover or duster.

5. Create a schedule

Try not to get overwhelmed worrying about the state of your house, remember that the summer is a time for you and your children to enjoy. If organization is your thing, then creating a schedule for your weekly cleaning routine might make you feel more relaxed. Start by building a list of all the jobs that need to be completed, designate a task to each family member and write it all out.
