Understanding Bed Sizes

If you’re in the market for a new bed, mattress, or both, you’ll know how exciting it is to give your bedroom the refresh it deserves. At the same time, choosing a size of bed can be confusing, especially if you’re looking for something in a different size than what you have now. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered with the below guide so you can spend less time searching, and more time snoozing. Sweet dreams, Swyft fans!

Swyft Top Tip 👉 Not quite sure how big of a bed you can get away with? Take the measurements of the bed you're after, and use masking tape on the floor to mark out the exact area you want it to go in. Check there's enough room with your current layout and other furniture.

Are UK and European bed and mattress sizes the same?

The short answer is no, not all UK and European bed and mattress sizes are the same. If you’re looking to buy a bed and your mattress was purchased from any European retailer, you’ll need to check it’s going to fit your new bed, and likewise.

What size is a UK single bed and mattress?

Mattresses for single beds are 90cm wide, and 190cm long. Coming in at 3ft wide and 6ft 3 long, they’re the perfect size for a single adult, which makes them great for spare rooms and guest rooms. If you’re after somewhere for solo snoozing, single beds are the ideal space-saving option.

What size is a UK double bed and mattress?

Mattresses for double beds are 135cm wide, and 190cm long. There’s plenty of room for two adults on a double bed, with 4ft 6 of width, and 6ft 3 of length. This is the most widely available and popular bed size for UK adults. If you’ve got a medium-sized room with furniture and storage needed for two, a double bed allows plenty of room for two, without taking up too much floor space overall.

What size is a UK king size bed and mattress?

Mattresses for king size beds come in at a generous 150cm wide, and 200cm in length. Because of their slightly longer (+10cm) length than a UK double bed, they offer that extra bit of room which is great if you or your partner are on the taller side. A UK king size bed should be used for larger rooms where space is aplenty.

What size is a UK super-king bed and mattress?

Mattresses for super-king beds are a huge 180cm wide, and 200cm long. This is the largest bed size readily available to buy, at 6ft wide and 6ft 6 in length. If you share a bed with a partner but like your own space to stretch out, a super-king size bed is the best option. Again, you’ll want to have a larger bedroom space to work with when you’re looking to switch to a super-king size bed, so don’t forget to measure up.
