How to Style a Round Coffee Table into Modern Home Decor

In the realm of interior design, the coffee table holds a unique position. It's not just a functional piece of furniture but also a focal point that can tie together the aesthetic of a room. Interior trend forecasting tells us that we will be seeing a lot more curved furniture with organic shaped so the simple round coffee table will blend in perfectly.

Gone are the days when coffee tables were predominantly rectangular or square. Today, the rounded silhouette of a coffee table adds a softness and fluidity to the space, making it a perfect fit for modern interiors. Whether you're looking to create a cozy conversation area in your living room or add a statement piece to your minimalist decor, incorporating a round coffee table can elevate the overall look and feel of your space.

In this blog, our interior designer, Kelly Collins, will share her thoughts on:

  • Coffee table styling

What style and trends should I look for?

In recent years, round organic-shaped coffee tables have surged in popularity, reflecting a growing appreciation for natural elements and fluid forms in interior design. These tables often feature soft, curved edges and organic materials such as wood, stone, or rattan, embracing the beauty of imperfection and irregularity. One prevalent trend is the incorporation of sustainable materials, with eco-friendly options like reclaimed wood and bamboo gaining traction among design enthusiasts. From Scandinavian-inspired minimalist designs to bohemian-chic creations infused with eclectic flair, round organic-shaped coffee tables offer endless possibilities for adding warmth, texture, and visual interest to modern interiors.

What size coffee table should I go for?

Determining the right size for a coffee table is crucial in achieving a balanced and functional living space. Several factors come into play when making this decision, including the dimensions of your seating area, the scale of your furniture, and the overall layout of the room. As a general guideline, your coffee table should be proportional to the size of your seating arrangement. You need around 30 - 45 cm in between your coffee table and sofa and you need to make sure the coffee table doesn't sit past the sofa. The coffee table needs to sit within your seating space.

It's also essential to consider the clearance around the table, ensuring that there's enough room for people to move comfortably around it. Ultimately, the ideal size of your coffee table will depend on your specific needs and preferences, so take the time to measure your space and consider how you envision using the table before making a decision.

What material should I choose for my coffee table?

Selecting the right material for your coffee table depends on various factors, including your personal style preferences, the overall aesthetic of your space, and practical considerations such as durability and maintenance.

Wood

Wood is a classic choice for coffee tables, offering warmth, versatility, and durability. Whether you prefer the natural grain of solid wood or the sleek finish of veneer, there's a wide range of wood options to suit every style, from rustic to modern. Easily cleaned, just make sure it's properly treated and don't leave water on it for a long period. Wood can warp so avoid having a wooden coffee table in places like conservatories where the atmosphere is humid.

Glass

Glass coffee tables add a touch of sophistication and airiness to any space. They're perfect for smaller rooms as they create an illusion of space and allow light to pass through, making the room feel more open and airy. However, they may require more maintenance to keep them free of fingerprints and smudges. I wouldn't suggest glass if you have young children for obvious reasons.

Metal

Metal coffee tables lend a contemporary edge to your decor with their sleek, industrial aesthetic. They're durable, easy to clean, and often come in a variety of finishes such as stainless steel, brass, or iron. Metal tables can also add a touch of glamour to your space when paired with other materials like glass or marble. Avoid this material if you are trying to warm up the decor, metals can look quite harsh.

Marble

Marble coffee tables exude elegance and luxury, making them a popular choice for modern and upscale interiors. They come in a range of colors and patterns, allowing you to choose a style that complements your decor. While marble is durable and easy to clean, it's important to note that it can be prone to staining and scratching, so proper care is essential.

Rattan

For a more casual and relaxed vibe, consider a coffee table made from rattan or wicker. These natural materials add texture and warmth to your space and are perfect for coastal or bohemian-inspired interiors. They're lightweight, easy to move around, and often come in a variety of styles and shapes.

What should I display on a round coffee table?

Styling a round coffee table can be a fun and creative process that adds personality and flair to your living space. Since the coffee table is round, try and avoid too many sharp corners and opt for a few more organic shapes. Start with larger items like vases (bulb vases) and plants and layer these up with flat items like books and trays. Next, incorporate items that create ambiance like small chargeable table lamps and candles. Then start adding interesting decorative items these will add dimension and character to your table. Consider varying heights and textures for a dynamic display. Finally add in personal touches such as family photos, framed prints, souvenirs from travels, or sentimental objects to make your coffee table styling feel more personalised and meaningful.

It's essential to strike a balance between functionality and aesthetics. Experiment with different combinations of items, and don't be afraid to rearrange them until you find a layout that feels cohesive and visually appealing. Ultimately, let your style and creativity guide you in curating a coffee table display that reflects your personality and enhances the overall look of your living space.

In conclusion, incorporating a round coffee table into your modern decor is a simple yet effective way to elevate the style and functionality of your space. With its sleek silhouette, versatile design, and ability to optimize space, a round coffee table is a must-have addition to any contemporary home. Whether you prefer a minimalist aesthetic or a more eclectic vibe, there's a round coffee table to suit your taste and enhance the overall look of your room.
