Hello, Model 10. Introducing the latest mid-century inspired sofa to join the Swyft range. We caught up with Model 10 designer André Faustino to find out more about the process behind this exciting new addition.
Q: Hi, André. Can you tell us about Model 10 and its design?
“Model 10 is a mid-century inspired sofa that offers timeless versatility with contemporary comfort. The back cushions feature handmade double-top-stitch detailing that immediately catches the eye.”
“Model 10 has a raised solid ash wood plinth and its turned legs boast a rich wenge finish. We’ve designed this new addition to include angled arms, splayed legs and shallow pull detailing to the cushions. All of these details have been chosen as a nod to true mid-century styling characteristics, creating a truly timeless look.”
Q: What was the goal when designing Model 10?
“Designing Model 10 was all about taking lots of inspiration from mid-century styling and then bringing it into the 21st century. It’s got all the classic features, but has been given a clean, modern upgrade.”
We wanted to create a sofa that respects the past, but fits comfortably and looks great in a contemporary environment. I think we’ve been really successful in creating a sofa that showcases the perfect balance of mid-century aesthetics with modern functionality.”
Q: How does Model 10 work?
“Like all our sofas, Model 10 is a flat-pack design. This means the sofa can be assembled using our SWYFT-LOK™ fastening technology, allowing for quick, easy assembly without the need for tools. I think we’ve been really successful in creating a sofa that showcases the perfect balance of mid-century aesthetics without compromising on modern functionality.”
Q: How long has it taken to design Model 10, from concept through to launch?
“In total, Model 10 took about 12 weeks from concept to launch. We’re really agile as a team, and it helps that we’ve got our own manufacturing site. Our team in Porto are always working away behind the scenes to make launches like this happen in the time frames they do. It’s always impressive.”
Q: From a design point of view, what things do you have to consider before launching a new collection like Model 10?
“Design is more than just aesthetics. We’re all about creating sofas that are built to last and don’t compromise on quality. The key things I think about are:
Quality: the product’s integrity, making sure it’s fit for purpose and is tested to meet our 15-year frame guarantee.
No-tool assembly: making sure we’ve upheld our promise of quick and easy assembly by integrating SWYFT-LOK™ fastening technology into every design.
Comfort: a good looking sofa’s no good if it’s not comfortable. For Model 10, the seat cushions are made from pocket springs wrapped in resilient foam. On the back cushions, we’ve used a hollow fibre that’s super soft but not so much that it needs lots of plumping. It’s about getting that balance right.
Attention to detail: We take real pride in our processes, and getting the small stuff right is really important. For example, Model 10’s wood plinth and double top stitch details. All of these seemingly unimportant elements really add up to elevate a sofa from average to premium. For us, the details matter.”
